September 16/17 2017

On Saturday and Sunday (September 16 and 17, 2017), I volunteered to work the Portrait Discovery Cart at the National Portrait Gallery. In this position, I was given the opportunity to facilitate visitor experience with rentable bags filled with a historical doll, activity sheets, an activity book and a seek and find guide.

These discovery kits allow for families with younger children to interact more deeply with the art and each other.

Military Appreciation Day

August 26, 2017

On Saturday, August 26, 2017, I volunteered for Family Day at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. This Family Day's theme centered on Military Appreciation Day.

I volunteered at the Create Your Own Exhibition table helping visitors build a "museum wall" out of construction paper. NPG provided markers, crowns, glue and portraits of heroes to paste into their museum wall.

  Botanic Garden: Early Opening

On August 27, 2017 I volunteered at the Botanic Gardens which hosts events for families and individuals with autism.

The Botanic Gardens opens early to ensure visitors with autism can enjoy the gardens without large crowds, excess noise and other harmful and distracting learning  and interaction interferences.

My specific job at the Botanic Garden was to help visitors plant their own sundews. The sundew plant is a carnivorous plant normally found in very wet environments.

Babe Ruth Day

On May 31, 2016 I volunteered to work a Babe Ruth Baseball themed Family Day at the National Portrait Gallery.

During my internship I created a series of easy-read flyers to alert visitors to the activities offered at various tables within the courtyard.

During the Family Day I worked at the "Make Your Own Baseball Card" table. We took polaroid pictures of the visitors and a card-stock holder for the photo. Visitors were then able to enter stats and facts about themselves.
